January originally auditioned for the role of Peggy in Mad Men.
Weiner liked her, though felt that she was not right for the role of Peggy. So he auditioned her again and made the role of Betty a much more major character.

In Vanity Fair magazine Weiner spoke about January. He stated: “It was one of the most remarkable auditions I’ve ever seen and I think I can say this with impunity at this point—[before Mad Men] she was not taken seriously as an actress".
Weiner also said: "It took people a while to get used to the fact that what she’s doing is acting in a very sophisticated way, that she completely embodies this person. If you saw that audition, you’d be like, ‘Oh my God, that’s the show.’ She was that person, Betty Draper.

January has revealed that "A lot of the stuff that I do with Betty is in the eyes. A lot of the feelings that I evoke with her are unspoken, so that’s been fun to play with".

January has said that she went into Matt Weiner's office and said, “I don’t know if I agree with this and how it’s going,” referring to the last episode of season 2. It confused her that Betty agreed to have an affair.

According to JJ's interview in Vanity Fair, Mad Men's creator Weiner suggested the actress read “Ariel,” the poem by Sylvia Plath—an abstract howl of female rage and despair.
“It confused me and freaked me out,” Jones said. Not knowing the coming plotlines, she assumed this was his way of telling her Betty would be sticking her head in an oven for the season finale.
